About Me |
I am Terry Spier, designer and maker of fine, beaded jewelry.
My beadwork – necklaces, bracelets, earrings and sets – are all created from my imagination and my belief that jewelry is art – to be worn, enjoyed and loved.
Each piece that is created in my studio is handmade, individual and unique. Many pieces incorporate unusual, irreplaceable beads and findings from other countries. I only use professional grade supplies in my creations and each piece is certain to be appreciated for years to come.
I pride myself in my one-of-a-kind creations and in also doing special pieces commissioned by buyers.
My love of natural stone and color is represented by my use of jasper, turquoise, coral and amazonite, to name a few. Swarovski crystals are often used in my creations and add vibrant color and intensity. Sterling silver from Bali, Israel, India and Thailand complement the precious and semi-precious stones, ceramic beads and glass that come from many different cultures and continents.
I am fascinated by goddess images and Her presence is reflected in some of my work. There is so much to gain from understanding the spiritual and healing properties of crystals and gemstones, and their use to empower, calm or energize. As well, beads have been used throughout recorded history as amulets and a form of protection. All of this inspires me and informs what stones I use and in what combination. I have included a section on Gemstone Lore to explain some of the properties associated with many of the stones used for your enjoyment.
From the time I bought my first piece of art glass when in my 20’s, glass has held me captive. In my work I use dichroic glass, handmade lampwork beads and other focal beads that are unique. There is something about how light effects glass and can change how it looks that captivates me and always draws me in.
I think that my life has followed a circular path, both geographically and spiritually. I have been an antique dealer, a college professor, a psychotherapist and photographer. However, beading has remained a constant for me since the 60’s.
I am originally from Montreal and have lived on both coasts of Canada and the United States.
Throughout my life I have been fascinated by color and shape. My work is inspired by the Native work I saw when in Vancouver, BC; the hippie styles of the 60’s; the great ethnic diversity of Toronto and Southern Florida; and the strong female and spiritual presence in Toronto and my current home in Western Massachusetts.
I proudly display the SRAJD logo on my website. SRAJD is an acronym for Self-Representing Artist Jewelry Designer and may only be used by Artisans who design and sell their own work. There is a lot of "product" on the market, much of which is mass produced and sold as artisan jewelry. Buying from a Self-Representing Artist who displays this logo signifies your support for the artist and their hard work that goes in to each piece they create.
